FC Bayern Munich
FC Bayern Munich (German: FC Bayern München) is based in Munich and is one of the most successful clubs in football history. With 2 Intercontinental Cups, 4 EU Champions League titles, 1 UEFA Cup title, 1 Cup Winners' Cup title, 20 national championships, and 13 German Cups, Bayern Munich is Germany's foremost football club.
Bayern is a membership based club and with more than 132,000 members, the third largest in the world after SL Benfica and FC Barcelona.
The football club Bayern Munich was formed by Franz John in 1900. Bayern Munich did not feature in the Bundesliga when it began in 1963. However, in 1965 Bayern Munich promoted to the top flight. Soon after, the legendary Franz Beckenbauer changed times for Bayern Munich and the rest is history. It was that time that the legendary football players Sepp Maier, the Kaiser Franz Beckenbauer and Gerd Müller played for Bayern Munich that started to dominate the Bundesliga and the rest of Europe.
In fact, since 1966, Bayern Munich (with other football legends such as Uli Hoeness, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Lothar Matthäus) has won 16 Bundesliga titles, nine German Cups, four European Cups (their latest in 2001), and two UEFA Cups. Today, Bayern Munich remains one of Europe's top football clubs.
For 30 years now, Bayern Munich's stadium has been the Olympic stadium in Munich. However, Bayern's club future is now committed to the new Allianz Arena in Fröttmaning. Construction is scheduled to begin in autumn 2002 with a completion date of summer 2005. The new Allianz Arena will also host the opening ceremony and first match of the 2006 World Cup.
