About the PDC World Darts Championship
The PDC World Darts Championship features 72 players from around the world who compete to make it into the preliminary round. The preliminary round will include 16 players competing to play against darts’ top names in the first proper round of the Championship.
The tournament first began in 1994 and is run by the Professional Darts Organisation. It was originally held at the Circus Tavern in Purfleet but after 14 years the event moved to Alexandra Palace in London.
The World Darts Championship was originally sponsored by Ladbrokes and known as the Ladbrokes World Darts Championship. The event changed sponsorship and is now named the William Hill World Darts Championship.
The event sees the best players in darts compete against each other so much so that only six players have ever won the title: Dennis Priestley, John Part, Phil Taylor and Raymond Van Barnevald, Adrian Lewis and Michael van Gerwen. Phil Taylor has dominated the tournament winning the most titles of any player.
The current champion is Michael van Gerwen who beat the Scottish player, Peter Wright, in the 2013 World Darts Championship. It is the first time Michael van Gerwen has won the title having being a runner-up to Phil Taylor in 2013.
The current World Darts Championship prize fund is set at £1,050,000 and the winners share is £250,000!
