The BetVictor World Matchplay returns to Blackpool’s Winter Gardens in July with the first round of matches taking place on Saturday 19. The BetVictor World Matchplay tournament then culminates with the semi-finals on Saturday 26 and the final on Sunday 27 July.
Going into its 20th year, the BetVictor World Matchplay tournament will see Phil Taylor return to defend his title.
Last year Phil Taylor won the competition for the sixth successive year becoming the only darts player ever to do so. He beat Adrian Lewis with a win of 18-13 and scooped the £400,000 prize fund.
This year the prize fund has been increased to a staggering £450,000 – meaning there’s even more to play for.
About BetVictor World Matchplay Darts
The BetVictor World Matchplay is a darts tournament, played in a legs format, and is run by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). The tournament is sponsored by the betting company, BetVictor.
The BetVictor World Matchplay has been played yearly since 1994 at the Winter Gardens in Blackpool. The first ever winner was Larry Butler, who beat Dennis Priestley 16-12. Phil Taylor is the reigning champ and has been for a record-breaking six years. It is regarded as the second biggest PDC Tournament; status shown by the fact the whole tournament was sold out within 3 days of the tickets being on sale.
The difference between this and other darts tournaments is that there is no deciding leg - players must win by two clear legs. The first round is usually played over the first to 10 legs, but if the score reaches 9-9, play continues until either player gains a 2 leg lead.
This year the BetVictor World Matchplay celebrates its 20th anniversary and with it sees the biggest ever prize up for grabs; a whopping £450,000 will go to the winner of the tournament.
