Grand National
The Grand National is a yearly horse riding event which takes place at Aintree Racehorse track in Liverpool, UK.
The horse race began in 1839 and is the world’s greatest steeplechase race stretching over 4 miles and 4 furlongs. The winner of the first Grand National was a horse named Lottery and the rider, Jem Mason.
During World War I, the race was held at Gatwick Racecourse but was not considered the “official Grand National” and from then onwards was held at Aintree Racecourse.
Throughout the years, the Grand National has become synonymous with the horse Red Rum and famed for winning the race three times (1973, 1974, and 1977). Red Rum became famous in the race from going from a lame horse to a winning horse.
The Grand National has had many hiccups and memorable events that have made it stand out from other horse riding events. From the 1981 heart-warming story of Bob Champion who fought back testicular cancer and a horse suffering from health problems, revived back to health – so popular that it was made into a film based on actual events!
In more recent times, Red Rum trainer, Ginger McCain returned to the scene and won with horse Amberleigh House in 2004.
Tickets for the Grand National are always popular, with Ladies Day pulling in the crowds and all the twists and turns that come with one of the most famous British races on the sporting calendar.
