Australian motorsport has its spiritual home on Phillip Island. The long tradition started with car races in the early 1920’s, motorcyle races followed in the 30’s. The early events were held on public roads until a dedicated race circuit was built in 1956. Phillip Island is built in front of truly breathtaking scenery and boasts very fluid, fast tracks.
Bad management made the circuit fell into disrepair in the 70’s, until a AUS $5m facelift saw Phillip Island slowly returning to the motorsport calendars.
MotoGP first returned for the seasons ‘89 and ‘90, before it became a permanent fixture from 1997 onwards, providing the ground for some truly spectacular motorsport moments.
