Set against the excellent soundtrack by Cole Porter, ‘Anything Goes’ follows stowaway Billy Crocker on board the S.S. American heading for England where he is trying to win the heart of Hope Harcourt, who is with her mother on the way to get married to her fiancé, the English nobleman Sir Evelyn Oakleigh.
Also on board is Billy’s friend, the nightclub owner Reno Sweeney, his former boss, Elisha J. Whitney, who aims to make a very important business deal on the old continent and the gangster ‘Moonface’ Martin (aka ‘Public Enemy 13’) and his friend Erma.
The narrative is a classic plot of romances and intrigues, accidental encounters and parallel storylines that eventually all come together.
Although the plot sets up many moments of high farce, it is for Cole Porter's musical score that Anything Goes stands out. The show is peppered with classic tracks such as I Get A Kick Out Of You, It’s De-Lovely, All Through The Night and the title number Anything Goes.
Timothy Crouse and John Weidman have the original book (which PG Wodehouse co-wrote), while the elaborate costumes are provided by Anthony Powell, who has previously designed costumes for movies such as Indiana Jones And The Last Crusade and 101 Dalmatians.
