My Fair Lady

My Fair Lady

Alan Jay Lerner and Frederick Loewe’s masterpiece. My fair Lady is the tale of Henry Higgins, professor for linguistics, who gets himself into a bet with fellow professor of phonetics, Colonel Pickering. Higgins boasts to coach any women, no matter her social status or upbringing, to speak and act to pass as a duchess.

Higgins persuades the poor flower girl, Eliza Doolittle, she could benefit from his training and suggests the possibility of a better job. The long, painful make-over begins and transforms the girl with the decidedly cockney accent to a Lady and in the course raises her father, an amoral, drink-loving dustman, uncomfortably into middle-class respectability.

For all the scene-setting shenanigans of continually changing locations, there's no denying this social fairy tales' place alongside other smash hits. Eliza shouting uncouthly at the races is a forerunner to Pretty Woman, and there's more than a touch of the Oscar Wilde about these jokes at the expense of high society. This show may be an adaptation of a Motion Picture, but Shaw's notion that class is determined by how we speak is as resonant today as a cockney accent.
