Sam Smith becomes UK number one with debut album
02 Jun 2014
Sam Smith’s In The Lonely Hour has become the fastest selling debut album of 2014 taking the No.1 spot in this week’s charts.
In The Lonely Hour debuted at No.1 on the UK charts this week forcing Coldplay’s sixth album into the No.2 position.
In just one week, In The Lonely Hour has seen record sales for a debut album selling 101,000 copies. The staggering amount ranks Sam Smith as the third highest selling album of 2014 in the UK behind Coldplay’s Ghost Stories (168,000 copies) and Paolo Nutini’s Caustic Love (109,000 copies).
Rounding out the top five in this week’s Official Album Charts is Coldplay’s Ghost Stories (2), Caustic Love by Paolo Nutini (3), Paloma Faith’s A Perfect Contradiction (4) and Michael Jackson’s Xscape (5).
Sam Smith, who won the Critics’ Choice Award at this year’s Brits, is not unfamiliar with the top spot as his singles from In The Lonely Hour, Stay With Me and Money On My Mind, both landed him UK No.1s.
The London born singer-songwriter will tour the UK in support of the No.1 album in October, following several festival appearances this summer. Tickets for Sam Smith’s tour are now on sale.
