Taylor Swift breaks sales record with 1989 album
05 Nov 2014
Taylor Swift has become the only artist to have three albums sell over one million copies during the first week of release in the US.
The 24-year-old has sold over 1.28 million copies of her fifth album 1989 over in the US during its first week of release. The achievement has meant that Taylor Swift is the first artist to have three albums surpass the one million sales mark in its first week of release.
The star first reached the one million mark with her third album Speak Now while her fourth album Red surpassed this with over 1.2 million sales in the first week.
Taylor Swift came close to beating the record of most album sales held by a female artist but fell short to Britney Spears. Her 2000 release - Oops!... I Did It Again - held on to that title with over 1.31 million sales.
Over in the UK, Swift landed the tittle of fastest-selling album of 2014 by a female artist. The star exceeded previous record holder Sam Bailey, whose album Power Of Love sold over 72,000 copies while Taylor Swift enjoyed 90,000.
1989, an album inspired by the decade she was born, has been dubbed Swift’s first official pop album. The singer-songwriter worked with a number of producers including Shellback and Max Martin. 1989 includes the lead single Shake It Off and was released by Big Machine.
Meanwhile, Taylor Swift announced on Monday 2 November that she will embark on a world tour in support of the album. The tour will include just three-dates in the UK. Taylor Swift’s UK tour dates will take place in Glasgow, Manchester and London. The latter of which will be part of the British Summer Time Hyde Park festival, which is held annually in London.
Earlier in the year, Taylor Swifter performed five sell-out nights at London’s The O2 as part of her Red tour. The concert saw Swift invite a different special guest to perform each night including Ed Sheeran and Ellie Goulding.
