BBC Proms top picks

The highly esteemed BBC Proms takes place throughout the summer but with over 76 events running over the course of eight weeks it's easy to be overwhelmed.
Here are our top picks for the 2014 BBC Proms.
1) Prom 22: War Horse Prom
Sunday 3 August
For the first time the Proms have collaborated with the National Theatre in commemoration of the First World War. The War Horse Prom has been inspired by Michael Morpurgo’s award-winning play, War Horse, and will see the War Horse puppets join the BBC Royal Orchestra, Gareth Malone and the Military Wives.
2) Prom 76: Last Night of the Proms
Saturday 13 September
The final night of a glorious few weeks ends with Sakari Oramo directing his first Last Night. He is joined by violinist Janine Jansen. The evening will include performances from Elizabeth Watts, John Daszak, Roderick Williams, BBC Singers, Symphony Chorus and Orchestra.
3) Prom 44: Berlioz – Symphonie fantastique
Tuesday 19 August
Making its Proms debut is the Melbourne Symphony Orchestra with conductor Sir Andrew Davis for an evening that will be full of passion, despair, love and death.
4) Prom 21: The John Wilson Orchestra – Kiss Me, Kate
Saturday 2 August
John Wilson and his orchestra will perform Cole Porter’s Tony Award- reworking of Shakespeare’s The Taming of the Shew following the huge success of their 2012 My Fair Lady performance.
5) Prom 65: Late Night with … Paloma Faith
Friday 5 September
Part of the late night series, Paloma Faith brings her retro style to the Royal Albert Hall accompanied by a 42-piece jazz orchestra and the Urban Voices Collective.
6) Prom 29: Chopin, Franck, Saint-Saëns & Casella
Friday 8 August
Starting the evening is conductor Laureate Gianandrea Noseda with Casella’s Heroic Elegy. Next, Benjamin Grosvenor, the 22 year old British pianist, makes his return for the fourth time performing in the Franck and in Chopin’s virtuosic Piano Concerto No. 1. Saint-Saëns’s ‘Organ’ Symphony ends the night.
7) Proms in the Park
Saturday 13 September
Often cited as the highlight of the Proms calendar, the open-air event returns to London’s Hyde Park on 13 September 2014. The legendary Earth, Wind & Fire will perform while Sir Terry Wogan is on hand to present. Also on the bill are Pumeza Matshikiza (soprano), Vittorio Grigolo (tenor), Rufus Wainwright, and the BBC Concert Orchestra.
