In One Direction to the top
The heartthrobs who are currently on tour in Australia responded to an unprecedented ticket demand for the initial UK dates of their Where We Are 2014 UK tour by adding extra dates to their stints in Dublin, Manchester and London.
With now 3 consecutive open-air stadium shows in each city, the One Direction boys scratching on Take That’s Progress Live tour success. Where We Are sees One Direction move from arenas to stadiums, venues usually reserved for an elite list of rock and pop stars at least double the age of each One Direction member.
More than just a fad
There’s little denying, One Direction are more than just a fad in the current music climate. They might have been conceived at a reality talent show but the proof is in the lasting and growing success. Their debut Up All Night and its follow-up, Take Me Home, sold close to 9 million copies – that’s in a climate where the music industry keeps moaning about music piracy and online streaming.
But the success doesn’t stop there. The Morgan Spurlock directed 3D semi-documentary feature film One Direction: This Is Us has made waves before it was unveiled and is hotly tipped for a Golden Globe award and according to their fans, it’s live is where this band has to be experienced and, yes, a soft spot for [enter your favorite One Direction member here] will help.
Relentless touring: The boys are working hard
But this snide joke aside, One Direction tour relentlessly in comparison to many of their contemporaries.
The band’s first headlining tour, the Up All Night Tour launched in late 2011 and continued until mid-2012. At the end of the tour, Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson performed 62 live dates mainly in the UK and Europe but the band also sowed the seeds for their bid to musical world domination with their first foray into North America and Australia.
The 'New Beatles'?
The plan was fruitful and the US media quickly crowned One Direction “The New Beatles” – much to the dismay of pretty much everyone who wasn’t a 1D convert.
Their Take Me Home Tour followed and clocked in 127 arena dates around the globe, including a 6-night stint at The O2 London alone.
Where we are! And where to next?
The band members won’t have much time off for themselves. After completing the current tour of Australia, busy promotion activities awaits One Direction for their highly anticipated forthcoming new album, Midnight Memories (release date: 25 November) and preparations for the new World tour launching Spring 2014 are already looming on the horizon.
