Beyoncé releases surprise album
13 Dec 2013
Beyoncé surprised fans by releasing her fifth studio album on iTunes overnight.
The eponymous visual album, which features 14 new songs and 17 music videos, is a family affair with appearances from husband Jay-Z and daughter Blue Ivy.
The BBC reported that Beyoncé wrote “Surprise!” and said that she was bored of releasing music in the traditional way.
Glamour magazine published a statement from Beyoncé that commented on the visual aspect of the album following the release, “It's more than just what I hear. When I'm connected to something, I immediately see a visual or a series of images that are tied to a feeling or an emotion, a memory from my childhood, thoughts about life, my dreams or my fantasies. And they're all connected to the music."
The album that follows on from 2011’s 4 is expected to be available in physical form on 21 December but remains exclusive to iTunes for a week.
Beyoncé’s new album comes after Columbia Records’ Rob Stringer hinted that Beyoncé would release her fifth album in 2014.
Beyoncé announced that she is bringing her 2014 world tour, Mrs. Carter Show, back to the UK in February.
