Kings of Leon make Oscars 75 song shortlist
19 Dec 2013
The Academy Awards released a list of 75 songs that have been shortlisted for this year’s award of Best Original Song.
The American rockers, Kings of Leon, have made it onto the Oscar’s long list of songs to win this year’s Best Original Song. They’re up against the likes of Jay Z, Coldplay and Dave Grohl.
The list was revealed on Wednesday with Baz Luhrmann’s Great Gatsby topping it as the film with the most songs shortlisted. Five tracks from the film, which includes Lana Del Rey’s Young and Beautiful and The XX’s Together, made the list.
Kings of Leon wrote the songs Last Mile Home for the film August: Osage County in which Julia Roberts stars. Last Mile Home also appears on the band’s latest album, Mechanical Bull.
The 75 long song list may seem excessive but it is part of the Oscars new process to make sure that at least five songs are nominated for the award. The change follows 2012’s hiccup where only two songs were nominated out of a 39 song shortlist.
The final list of nominations for the Best Original Song will be announced on 16 January while the Oscars will take place on 2 March. It will be the 86th year of the annual awards.
Kings of Leon will play four shows in the UK in 2014 following the release of their album, Mechanical Bull, earlier this year.
