Ed Sheeran has biggest selling album of 2014
03 Oct 2014
Ed Sheeran’s X has been named the bestselling album of 2014 beating the likes of Sam Smith, Pharrell Williams and Coldplay.
The album has overtaken Coldplay’s Ghost Stories, which was named biggest-selling album earlier this year, selling over 634,000 copies as opposed to Coldplay who have sold 470,000.
X was released in June this year and spent eight weeks at the top of the UK charts. The last male solo singer to achieve the feat was James Blunt back in 2005 with Back To Bedlam.
Joining Ed Sheeran on the list of best-selling albums is fellow Brit singer-songwriter Sam Smith with In The Lonely who is currently ranked in second position. His record charted at No.1 in May and has remained in the Top 5 ever since.
The Top 10 bestselling albums of 2014 only features one international artist (Pharrell Williams’ GIRL in seventh place) while British singers and bands make up the rest including Paolo Nutini’s Caustic Love, Bastille’s Bad Blood and Arctic Monkeys’ 2013 release AM.
Ed Sheeran starts his biggest tour of the UK and Ireland tonight in Dublin where he will play four dates at the 3Arena before heading to England to play concerts across the country. Tickets are now on sale for Ed Sheeran’s tour.
