One Direction Make Pop History
22 Mar 2012
British boyband sensation One Direction have achieved what no other British band has ever managed and shot straight to the US Billboard Album Charts to the #1 position.
Pushing American homebred Rock heavyweight Bruce Springsteen off the top spot is somewhat a sign of how the current musical climate has shifted and a new generation of artists claiming a spot in the pop pantheon.
Last week it was reported that another young Brit re-wrote pop history. Adele’s best-selling album “21” surpassed all-time sales of Pink Floyd’s landmark “Dark Side of The Moon” album.
Breaking into the American market has been the focus and downfall of many British bands ever since the British Invasion in the 1960’s led by The Beatles and The Rolling Stones. Famously Oasis never managed to break the US although the band fronted by The Gallagher brothers achieved superstardom almost everywhere else on the globe.
Only a handful of British acts have ever left their mark on a large scale on the other side of the pond. Bands like U2, The Cure and more recently Coldplay all have achieved this accolade.
But for the most part, these acts have broken the US by relentlessly touring. One Direction are a completely different tribe of a band, coming from a manufactured, reality TV background, it will be interesting to see how the five One Direction heart-throbs Zayn, Liam, Niall, Louis and Harry can sustain the impressive success of landing a British debut album at Number One in the US.
Touring is what One Direction do better than any other current boyband, at least over here in the UK. The boys have just come off their last sold-out arena tour and have already announced a new One Direction tour for 2013!
