Madonna Stands Up For Gay Rights in Russia
23 Mar 2012
Madonna has spoken up for gay rights in Russia. The superstar is due to play in St Petersburg in August 2012 and said on her Facebook page "I will come to St. Petersburg to speak up for the gay community and to give strength and inspiration to anyone who is or feels oppressed".
Russia is notorious for its views on homosexuality, and although the ban to decriminalize the act was lifted in 1993, the country is known for being intolerant against homosexuality. The new law would see organisations who are seen to be promoting homosexuality or pedophilia among minors to be fined up to £10,000.
Madonna has always been an advocate of human rights and no stranger to controversy herself.
