Girolamo Frescobaldi In-depth Biography
An Italian organist and composer primarily of keyboard music and some sacred and secular vocal music who is said to have had a beautiful singing voice and been an accomplished lute and organ player. Frescobaldi}'s keyboard pieces transformed the toccata into a much more dramatic form and were used as instrumental breaks during the mass (for instance, when the host was elevated). He introduced the variation technique into the canzone, brilliant chromatic counterpoint in the fugal ricercare, and was one of the few composers whose work J. S. Bach}, while learning the craft of music, copied out in full by hand. ~ Blue Gene Tyranny, All Music Guide
