Jonathan Miller sets Richard Strauss' lush romantic comedy in 1911 (the opera premièred in January of that year) and in so doing infuses the action with a sense of the impending war, adding poignancy to an already emotional mix. Strauss' sensual masterpiece includes 'The Presentation of the Rose' and the sublime 'Trio' in the last Act.
Janice Watson returns to the Company to makes her début as the Feldmarschall in this rich and elegant revival. Her lover, Octavian, is played by Alice Coote, who tackles this 'travesty' role for the first time. Susan Gritton sings Sophie and the pivotal role of Baron Ochs is shared by John Tomlinson and Stephen Richardson.
