Giselle
Giselle is a French ballet written by by Jules-Henri Vernoy de Saint-Georges and Théophile Gautier with music by Adolphe Adam.
The ballet first premiered in Paris, June 1841 and is now being performed at the The Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Italy.
A story about love and tragedy, the setting is a village in the Rhineland; Giselle is a French court girl who falls in love with a nobleman, Loys. He hides his true identity from her and when she discovers the truth, kills herself in a fit of madness.
Giselle is told a story by her mother before her death that a group of maidens called the Wilis, lure noblemen to their death by making them dance till their deaths. The nobleman returns later to the village, filled with remorse but finds no comfort in the end.
