The devout Tosca finds that her virtue is to be compromised if she is to save the painter Cavaradossi from the hands of the brutal, devious police chief Baron Scarpia. After an absence of four years Luciano Pavarotti returns to Covent Garden to play the part of the idealistic artist Cavaradossi opposite American soprano Carol Vaness as the title role.
