Twelfth Night
One of Shakespeare’s most loved comedy’s ‘Twelfth Night’ tells the story of twins Viola and Sebastian who are separated after a ship-wreck. Viola dresses up as a gentleman so she can work in the court of Orsino, in order to woo Countess Olivia, on behalf of the Duke of Illyria.
While Olivia mourns the loss of her brother, she has become disinterested in any other suitors, until she sees Viola (or Cesario) as she now becomes. While all of this is going on, Olivia’s drunken uncle, Sir Toby, is causing all kinds of mischief and plays a trick on his prudent servant Malvolio.
Twelfth Night was written by William Shakespeare around the beginning of the 17th century and was first performed in 1602 at the end of the twelfth night after Christmas day. The Eve of the feast Epiphany involved masters and servants, and men and women swapping roles and clothes.
