Charlton returned to the Premiership for the 2000/01 season and remained there until their relegation in May 2007.

While recent additions, such as coach Alan Curbishley or team captain Alan Pardew, promised to put a change to this, Charlton was instead stricken with bad luck, resulting in a series of games that saw the team drop down the ranks to #18 and subsequently faced relegation from the Premiership.
