Middlesbrough FC was a founder member of the FA Premier League in 1992. Middlesbrough's debut season ended in relegation. In 1995 the former captain of the English team took the helm and lead Middlesbrough f.c. back into the top flight. Middlesbrough f.c. were promoted as First Division champions in their final year before moving from Ayresome Park to the new state-of-the-art Riverside Stadium. The team showed their drive to be a force in the top flight by investing in big talent:Brazilian's Juninho and Emerson and Italy's Fabrizio Ravanelli. Middlesbrough also managed to bring on England stars Paul Gascoigne, Nick Barmby and Paul Merson. In the 1996/1997 season Middlesbrough almost proved themselves to the Premiership League when they reached the finals of both the FA Cup and League Cup, but they were defeated by Chelsea and Leicester.
After relegation Middlesbrough f.c. came back to take their place in the top flight in 1998 and their best FA Premier League finish to date, ninth place.
