Snoop Dogg

Snoop Dogg (real name Calvin Cordozar Broadus, Jr.) was born 20th October 1971 and is from Long beach, California, USA. Other names for Snoop Dog include: Uncle Snoop, Snoop Doogy, and from July 2012, Snoop Lion, to emphasise his new identity from working on his new reggae project with top producers Diplo and Major Lazer.

There are few rappers that can claim to have to have had such an impact on the hip-hop and rap world, and that have connected to a global audience on the same level as Snoop Dogg. Snoop Dogg is one of the world’s best known and loved rapper’s from the West Coast hip-hop scene.

Snoop Dogg’s big break came when the infamous hip-hop producer and rapper Dr.Dre discovered him, and he collaborated with Snoop Dog on his solo album The Chronic and the theme music for the film Deep Cover. Doggystyle (1993) Snoop Dogg’s debut album went straight to #1 on the Billboard 200 and R&B charts, and was certified 4x platinum as well as containing the hit singles “What's My Name" and "Gin & Juice”.

The controversial rap star had faced murder charges but was acquitted of the crimes in 1996. With his new freedom, Snoop Dogg moved to a huge new home with his many pit bulls and set up Doggy Style Records, which was a subsidiary of the legendary Death Row Records who managed the likes of hip-hop giants 2Pac, MC Hammer and Nate Dogg amongst others.

Following a turbulent relationship with Death Row Records and a dispute over royalty payments, Snoop Dogg left the label to join No Limit Records (distributed by Priority/EMI Records) in 1998. He went on to have major success for the next four years with sales of over one million copies for his albums Da Game Is to Be Sold, Not to Be Told (1998), No Limit Top Dogg (1999) and Tha Last Meal (2000) and Paid tha Cost to Be da Bo$$ (2002).

By 2004, Snoop Dogg had left behind his gangster image behind and had also moved to record label Geffen Records/Star Trak Entertainment (headed up by The Neptunes), where he released the R&B influenced hip-hop album R&G (Rhythm & Gangsta): The Masterpiece. The album contained the smash hit single "Drop It Like It's Hot" (featuring Pharrell Williams) and it was the first time one of Snoop Dogg’s albums had been as successful in the UK as well as in the US, reaching #2 on the UK Album Charts; featuring many top collaborations with artists such as Justin Timberlake, Nelly and The Bee Gees ("Signs", "Girl Like U" and 5 "Ups & Downs".

Snoop Dogg continued to produce high quality albums with many respected singers across the hip-hop, R&B, even the rock and pop genres. His 8th album Tha Blue Carpet Treatment featured works with the likes of Ice-Cube, Stevie Wonder, Cypress Hill amongst others. Snoop Dogg tried to reflect the ‘softer’ side to his previous gangster lifestyle but also educated his listeners to the tensions he had experienced before he achieved fame and success.

Snoop Dogg enjoyed experimenting with different musical styles and even ventured into Bollywood singing and acting in the Bollywood blockbuster Indian movie Singh Is Kinng, as well as releasing an accompanying album for the film.

Priority Records appointed Snoop Dogg to an executive position in 2009 and he went on to release his 10th studio album Malice n Wonderland. Although the album reached the top 50 on the Billboard Chart, it failed to emulate the success of his previous efforts. At this time, Snoop Dogg went on to collaborate with Damon Albarn on his project Gorillaz, and he contributed the song "Welcome to the World of the Plastic Beach" (featuring Snoop Dogg and Hypnotic Brass Ensemble) which took him in a musical direction with his work.

In 2011, Snoop Dogg continued to work with other pop super stars like American candy-pop superstar Katy Perry, on her smash hit single "California Gurls", and collaborated with several hot shot hip-hop producers such as Kanye West and David Banner for his next project Doggumentary which was received well, reaching #8 on the Billboard 200 Chart. The album contained the hit singles "Wet" (2010) which had been written for Prince Williams’ Bachelor Party and "Boom" which featured a sample from dance old skool hit makers, Yazoo.

Fast-forward to 2012 and Snoop Dogg has reinvented himself again as Snoop Lion and turned to reggae for his new image. He released the single “La La La” under his new Snoop Lion pseudonym.
