Adam Ant (real name Stuart Leslie Goddard) was born 3rd November 1954 and is from Marylebone, north west London. He is most famous for performing as part of his band Adam and The Ants during the period 1977-1982 and also as a solo artist from 1982-1985.
He has achieved a number of high-profile accolades such as an Ivor Novello Award for Songwriter of the Year in 1982, Kings of the Wild Frontier BRIT Awards: Best British Album and a Q Award in 2008.
Before he made his name in Adam and The Ants, Adam Ant was in another band called Bazooka Joe who famously played with the Sex Pistols back in 1975.
Throughout the ‘70s as Adam Ant struggled with his demons: suffering from anorexia in his early years when he married his student friend Carol Mills.
After Adam Ant was discharged from a mental hospital after he was admitted from an overdose, he met up with B-Sides (band) Lester Square and Andy Warren and together with drummer Paul Flanagan to form The Ants, as they were known back then. The Ants played their first gig at the ICA (Institute of Contemporary Arts) in 1977 and performed just one song: "Beat My Guest" to a shocked audience (the band was asked to stop playing).
From there onwards the band played a couple of more gigs at Man in the Moon pub and X-Ray Spex. Adam Ant got heavily in the Punk movement and appeared in the film "Jubilee". The band at the time was Adam (vocals and occasional guitar), Andy Warren (bass), Dave Barbe (drums), Mark Ryan (guitar) and Jordan (vocals). They played a version of "Plastic Surgery" in the film and from this went on to play at well-known popular venues such as The Vortex, The Roxy and the Marquee.
The Ants were renamed as Adam and The Ants by 1978 and Johnny Bivouac replaced Mark Ryan as they started a residency at the Marquee club. The Jubilee film soundtrack contained songs by the band and included “Plastic Surgery” and “Deutscher Girls”.
In 1979 Adam and The Ants went on a full national tour The Parisians Tour which started in Leeds and toured across England Wales.
The band went on to have continued success with their next release Dirk Wears White Sox which was released in November 1979, although the band by this point had reached breaking point and ended up parting ways for a few months.
Adam had to re-form his band with new band members as half of his band were taken away. He went on to produce Prince Charming. The album featured two United Kingdom #1 singles — "Stand and Deliver" and the title track "Prince Charming" — as well as the #3 UK hit "Ant Rap”. As a solo artist, Adam Ant has produced seven solo albums to date: Friend or Foe (1982), Strip (1983), Vive Le Rock (1985), Manners and Physique (1990) and Wonderful (1995).
