Calexico
Calexico is a cross-genre band from Tucson, Arizona compromising Joey Burns (vocals, guitar), John Convertino (drums, percussion), Paul Niehaus (pedal steel, guitar), Jacob Valenzuela (keys, trumpet, vibes), Michael Carbajal (trumpet), Sergio Mendoza (accordion, guitar, synthesizers, trumpet, vibes) and Chris Giambelluca (bass).
The name of the band came from a combination of their California/Mexico border heritage, and Calexico evolved.
Calexico has released five albums and five E.Ps to date, and have worked and recorded with the likes of Nancy Sinatra and other top singers from the blues and folk scene.
The band released their debut album Spoke (1997) and received praise from the likes of Wall Street Journal for their next album The Black Light (1998).
Calexico performed at various music festivals including Germany’s Hurricane Music Festival, Bonnaroo Music Festival, amongst others and built up their fan-base.
During the 2000s Calexico joined up with other bands and gained prominence in the music industry, working with the likes of Arcade Fire and Miami based folk band Iron & Wine. Carried To Dust (2008), the sixth album from Calexico, is the result of a thrilling journey from where they were, and how far they have come since they began.
Working with film producers, Calexico moved into film soundtracks and produced Circo – A Soundtrack By Calexico (20010) and The Guard – A Soundtrack By Calexico (2011).
