Cast burst onto the scene in the mid-90’s amidst the then buzzing Britpop invasion. The band, led by singer and former The La’s bassist John Power, launched their chart residency with the release of their debut single ‘Fine Time and followed it up with the Britpop anthem ‘Alright.’ ‘Alright’ charted in the UK charts and became one of the key indie anthems of the era.
Cast’s debut ‘All Change’ made it to Number 7 and included a collection of finely crafted power pop tunes, such as the aforementioned single, Alright but also Sandstorm, Fine Time and the ballads, Walkaway and Four Walls.
It was John Powers song writing skills, but also the sheer live power that catapulted Cast into the hearts of their fans. The band extensively toured the UK and Europe to rave reviews, including Noel Gallagher calling a Cast live experience a “near Religious experience.”
Indeed, Cast seemed almost possessed on stage. The band played with such energy that got them a reputation as a live powerhouse and Cast live shows were often compared to ones by the mighty The Who during their heydays.
The non-album single, Flying, bridged the time to the band’s second album, Mother Nature Calls, which was released in 1997 and included the Top-10 singles ‘Free Me,’ ‘Guiding Star’ and ‘Live The Dream.’
Two more albums, Magic Hour and Beetroot, followed but with the music scene moving away from Britpop in the late 90’s, Cast and many of their contemporaries found themselves slowly moving out of the charts. Citing internal differences, Cast split in 2001.
After undertaking a ‘Cast Acoustic Show’ Tour, John Powers announced Cast were working on new material and intent to showcase the new material alongside Cast classics on the forthcoming Cast comeback tour.
