About Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran has become one of, if not the, biggest singer-songwriters Britain has to offer. Since he was propelled into the limelight in 2011 with his debut album +, the red-haired star has gained a huge following across continents. The singer cemented himself as a firm favourite with both critics and music lovers with his unique voice, sparse instrumentation and candid lyrics.

Halifax-born Sheeran began his music career with the independent release of The Orange Room EP in 2005. More DIY releases and collaborations with artists from genres as varied as hip-hop, grime and indie followed. Notably he made it to No.2 in the iTunes chart without any label or promotion with his EP No.5 Collaborations Project, which featured Wiley, JME, Devlin, Sway and Ghetts.

Ed Sheeran’s rise to household name

Ed Sheeran was then signed by Atlantic Records and released his debut single The A Team from his album +. His album, which was released in 2011, went to No.1 in the charts and contained the singles The A Team, Lego House, Drunk and You Need Me, I Don’t Need You.

In 2012 Sheeran continued to gain popularity in the UK and won two BRIT Awards for Best British Male and British Breakthrough. Meanwhile the A Team won the Ivor Novello Award for Best Song Musically and Lyrically and was nominated for the Song of the Year award at the 2013 Grammy Awards.

Despite not releasing a solo album since his debut + in 2011, Sheeran kept busy writing songs for One Direction, including Over Again and Little Things, and made a guest appearance on Taylor Swift’s Red album before touring with her across America during 2013. Sheeran also performed with the musical legend Elton John during the 2013 Grammy Awards.

Ed Sheeran’s second album

2014 saw the release of Sheeran’s much anticipated second album X, which was produced by Rick Rubin. The record was a hit. Heading to No.1, the album spent a staggering nine weeks in the top spot and remained in the charts since its release.

The album contains Ed Sheeran’s first and second No.1 singles, Sing and Thinking Out Loud, along with One, Don’t and I See Fire from the The Hobbit: The Desoloation of Smaug soundtrack.

X, pronounced multiply, went on to conquer the American charts becoming Sheeran’s first No.1 album in the US. In support of the collection, Sheeran embarked on his biggest tour of the UK and Ireland during October. The tour saw the singer headline arenas for the first time.
