Sir Elton John started his music career in the mid 1960’s in short-lived bands, such Bluesology. It wasn’t until Elton John, then known under his real name Reginald Kenneth Dwight, answered an ad in the NME placed by Liberty records A&R, Ray Williams who eventually put Elton John in touch with Bernie Taupin and begin one of the most successful and long-lasting songwriting partnerships in history.
In 1969 Elton John released his first solo album, “Empty Sky,” followed by the eponymous titled album “Elton John” the next year. The album included the hit, “Your Song,” which has become one of Elton John’s trademark songs ever since. Elton John’s piano line in “Your Song” is heavily influenced by the work of Leon Russell, who Elton John has collaborated with most recently with on the 2010 album “The Union.”
The 1970’s saw Elton John becoming part of the Rock n’ Roll jetset elite, outrageous costumes, parties and a never-ending flow of hit albums and singles. “Rocket Man,” “Crocodile Rock,” “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road,” “Don’t Let The Sun Go Down On Me” “Don’t Go Breaking My Heart” or “Candle in the Wind” were just some of the songs that would shoot straight to the top of the charts.
In the 1980’s Elton John went for an unashamed pop sound with more chart storming hit singles, such as “I’m Still Standing,” “Sad Songs (Say So Much),” “I Don’t Wanna Go Down Like That,” “Sacrifice” and the cold-war love ballad, “Nikita.”
Elton John scored his biggest single with the re-version of “Candle in the Wind,” the tribute version he sung at the funeral for Lady Di in 1997. “Candle in the Wind 1997” would sell in excess of 33 million copies and got certified “The best-selling single of all time.”
Elton John vowed never to perform “Candle in the Wind 1997” again and instead performs the original version from his 1973 album, “Goodbye Yellow Brick Road.”
