Gloucester Guildhall (15th December 2012)
EMF were formed in 1989 and scored a massive hit in the pre-Grunge indie landscape with Unbelievable in 1991 off their equally successful Schubert's Dip debut album. The album also featured the single I Believe and some early live favourites, such as Lies, Travelling Not Running and Children.
The band toured relentlessy while also working on the follow-up. The result was the album Arizona that saw the band opt for a bigger and more rocking sound. By that time Nirvana had opened the flood gates and Grunge dominated the airwaves and clubs. EMF's excellent singles Never Know and Getting Through with its piercing U2 style guitar failed to make an impression in the charts and by the time Arizona arrived fans had moved on to other bands. Arizona was not a bad attempt and the several songs off Arizona, including the band's cover of Iggy Pop and The Stooges proto-punk anthem Search & Destroy became live favourites at their concerts.
The third album, Cha Cha Cha arrived in the middle of the Britpop craze and like its predecessor , failed to connect with the zeitgeist and vanished into obscurity.
EMF went into a long hiatus but reunited in the noughties and have since played sold-out shows and released a Best Of album that reminds everyone who missed out the first time what excellent band and live act the one-hit wonder actually is.
