Florence and The Machine

Florence Leontine Mary Welch was born in Camberwell, southwest London in 1986. At school Florence Welch was heavily influenced by fashion and art which was reflected with her image and artistic style.

Florence and The Machine is the name of the band which compromises singer Florence Welch and her band (The Machine). The rest of the band members are: Robert Ackroyd (guitar), Christopher Lloyd Hayden (drums), Isabella Summers (keyboards), Tom Monger (harp) and Mark Saunders (bassist).

Highlights of her career include her performance with Dizzy Rascal in the 2010 BRIT Awards singing “You Got The Dirtee Love” - a mash up of “You Got The Love” and “Dirtee Cash”. Florence and The Machine have been nominated and won a plethora of awards, Best New Artist at the 53rd Grammy Awards, Q Awards – Best Female and Best Song "You've Got the Love" in 2010.

Florence and the Machine shot to fame through a mixture of luck and talent and was known throughout the indie rock scene. Originally releasing material on the lesser known record label Filthy Lucre/About Records, it was a chance encounter with one half of the Queens of Noize manager Mairead Nash which would lead the band out from the underground, into the mainstream.

In 2009 Florence and the Machine had their first major hit with the album Lungs that catapulted the band into the limelight with sales of over 100,000k, and the album reached #2 on the UK Album Chart. Further gigs around the underground venues of trendy east London led onto massive arena tours. Florence and The Machine performed at the MEN Arena Manchester in 2006 and went on to support Duran Duran at Glastonbury in 2009.

Florence and The Machine toured the United States in 2011 where the band’s first album (Lungs) was really taking off and were initially going to record their second album Ceremonials in the States but decided against it, and recorded it in the UK. Ceremonials was released on 31st October 2011 and reached #1 in the UK Album Chart and #6 on the US Billboard Hot 200 Chart.

Dance/pop producer Calvin Harris worked with Florence and The Machine to secure the #1 spot on the UK Singles Chart in July 2012 with the new single “Spectrum”. Hot minimal tech producer and DJ Maya Jane Coles remixed the single for the dancefloor.

Frontwoman Florence Welch confirmed in August 2012 that she would be taking a long time out before starting work on the band’s next album.
