Kings of Leon were formed in 1999 by brothers Caleb, Nathan and Jared Followill, with their cousin Matthew Followill completing the line-up. Hailing from one of rock ‘n roll’s birthplaces, Nashville, Tennessee, Kings of Leon started life as a blues rock outfit with distinct southern rock influences. From early on in their career, Kings of Leon have shown their eagerness to progress and develop as a band and over the course of their career, Kings of Leon have grown and matured, adding new elements to their sound and songwriting.
Kings of Leon launched their career with their debut Youth & Young Manhood. The album reached #3 in the UK album charts and includes the single and fan favourite Molly’s Chamber, as well as the song Red Morning Light, which was used as FIFA’s 2004 opening song by EA Sports and also featured on a commercial for the Ford Focus in the US.
The follow-up album, Aha Shake Heartbreak followed the previous year and its singles Four Kicks, King of the Rodeo and especially The Bucket proved big successes especially in the UK where they introduced Kings of Leon to a wider fanbase. Like its predecessor, Aha Shake Heartbreak reached #3 in the UK album charts and #25 in the US. Kings of Leon toured Europe and the UK heavily, while being invited to open for U2 at the Irish rockers’ US leg of their Vertigo tour in 2005. The touring commitments paid off and Kings of Leon’s 2nd album scooped Platinum numerous times around the globe.
But it wasn’t until 2007’s Because Of The Times album that Kings of Leon broke into the mainstream, claiming the top spot in the UK album charts, while its singles Charmer and On Call have become the band’s trademark tunes and are staples on daytime radio.
By the time Kings of Leon’s third album, Only By The Night got released in 2008, the band had established themselves as one of the biggest acts of the moment alongside only a small elite of groups like U2, Coldplay, The Killers or Muse.
The lead single off Only By The Night, the up-tempo rocker Sex On Fire, claimed chart top spots everywhere with radio stations putting the song on heavy rotation. The album catapulted Kings of Leon further into the rock pantheon, awarding the Caleb, Matthew, Jared and Nathan 8x Platinum in the UK and 9x in Australia, while claiming number one spots in many more countries, including at their home in the US.
