Madonna, real name Louise Ciccone, is one, if not the most famous woman in pop music. From Madonna’s beginning of her musical career she has been an icon, constantly pushing her musical boundaries by changing her image and music styles.
She was born in Michigan but moved to New York City to pursue a career in dancing. Madonna joined bands, ‘The Breakfast Club’ and ‘Emmy,’ and in 1982 she was given the lucrative recording contract from where Madonna launched her stellar career.
Madonna’s debut album was released in 1983 and gave us the hit singles ‘Lucky Star’, ‘Borderline’ and ‘Holiday.’ Madonna’s music and style was being greatly received, her look was actually one of the main female styles of the 80s, copied by girls all over the globe.
Her second offering gave her global success. ‘Like a Virgin’ was a number one album and it listed in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame’s ‘Definitive 200 albums of all time’ in 2008. The Madonna live performance at the MTV Music Awards saw her jumping out of a cake in a wedding dress singing ‘Like a Virgin,’ she was blasted for it but at the same time it has gone down in MTV history as one of their most iconic performances of all time.
Madonna has tiptoed in acting, making her mainstream film debut in 1985’s box office hit ‘Desperately Seeking Susan,’ which also featured ‘Into the Groove,’ another Madonna hit, the 80’s teen flick ‘Who’s That Girl’ or ‘Evita,’ Madonna’s biggest acting role, where she starred as Argentina’s Eva Peron.
1985 saw the first Madonna tour, the following year her third album ‘True Blue’ was released and followed-up by the massive hit album, ‘Like A Prayer.’ By the end of the 1980’s Madonna had become the most successful, influential and often controversial female star of the decade.
‘The Immaculate Collection,’ Madonna’s first greatest hits collection was released in 1990 and has since become the best selling best-of compilation album of all time.
The birth of her daughter Lourdes in 1996, saw Madonna changing from the controversial material girl starlet of the 80’s to a woman and mother who was finding solace in a spiritual lifestyle, practicing Kabbalah.
This change of lifestyle was reflected in Madonna’s music, and live performances. Madonna live was different to her previous stage antics and 2001’s The Drowned World Tour became one of the highest grossing tours of year. With the album ‘Ray of Light,’ Madonna earned four more Grammys to her already extensive collection of awards and fans and critics agreed that Madonna was defiantly back to her best.
The following albums and tours saw Madonna develop on her own blend of electro-pop and urban sounds. Madonna tickets for the The Hard Candy and Sticky and Sweet tours were hot property, making both tours top financial successes and the forthcoming Madonna tour is set to repeat these triumphs.
