London, Scala, 1st August 2013
Mutya Keisha Siobhan are the first names of Mutya Buena, Keisha Buchanan and Siobhan Donaghy, the original members of the Sugababes who have now regrouped under the name Mutya Keisha Siobhan.
The news broke after Siobhan Donaghy tweeted "I'm excited to announce I'm back working with my original 90's girls."
The Sugababes story has been told many times and each time a new chapter has to be added that includes a new lineup. It seems only logical that after almost a decade since the band's first chart success with Overload, the original and many would argue, mots-respected line-up of the SUgababes put stheir past and differences aside to begein again. Enter: Mutya Keisha Siobhan!
Mutya Keisha Siobhan started their professional music careers in 1998, aged only 13 when Mutya and Siobhan met at showcase for All Saints manager Ron Tom. The two girls decided to work together and Mutya Buena invited her best friend Keisha Buchanan to join the lineup. Originally called the Sugababies, their record label London Records decided a more mature name was needed and changed it to Sugababes.
Mutya Keisha Siobhan released their Sugababes debut single in 2000. The single was called 'Overload' and shot straight to Number 6 charts but despite the chart success of 'Overload', subsequent singles and the debut album 'One Touch' did not meet the record label's expecations with the result of the Sugababes were dropped before their second album.
Siobhan Donaghy made the decision to leave the band in the middle of the band's tour of Japan in August 2001. It was the end of the first Sugababes era and the last time until 2012 that Mutya Keisha Siobhan would come back together to perform and work on new material.
The remaining founding members, Mutya and Keisha recruited former Atomic Kitten member Heidi Range into the Sugababes lineup. The band managed to found a new home with Island Record and released the new single 'Freak Like Me' in 2003. 'Freak Like Me' nailed the sound of the time; a mash-up pop gem combining their cover of Adina Howard's song of the same name with samples of Gary Numan's New Wave classic 'Cars'. The song clamied heavy rotation status on the airwaves, in clubes and occupied various European charts. More succesful singles followed and made this lineup of the Sugababes the longest lasting and most succesful.
Mutya Buena left the group in 2005, leaving Keisha Buchanan the only remaining founding member of the Sugababes. Keisha decide dto depart from her pet project in 2009. The Sugababes continue to this day with Heidi range, Amelle Berrabah and Jade Ewen.
The news of the reunion of Mutya Keisha Siobhan as, well, Mutya Keisha Siobhan is exciting and in many ways unique in the pop business. The girls can't use their own original band name Sugababes for legal reasons, and after almost 15 years of constantly changing line-ups, it is probabaly a good idea to start fresh with a new name: Mutya Keisha Siobhan!
