Achieving The X-Factor Dream
One Direction are an all boy pop band created on the 2010 British TV talent show X-Factor. The cheeky teen pop-stars are signed to pop mogul, Simon Cowells’ record label Sy-Co. One Direction consists of Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson.
As well as appearing in the X Factor Live Tour from February–April 2011 and releasing a number of exclusive behind the scenes books, One Direction have gone onto record their debut single "What Makes You Beautiful" which was released in August 2011 and reached number one in the UK Single Chart and performed well in other countries.
They also went on to release their second single "Gotta Be You" in mid November 2011 with their first studio album Up All Night coming out on the 20th November 2011.
In September 2011 One Direction released their story - Dare to Dream: Life as One Direction, and in November 2011, worked with JLS and the X-Factor finalists to produce the charity single Wishing On A Star.
One Direction Up All Night Tour And US Success
One Direction continued to build on their success and announced their first full international tour, Up All Night Tour, where 1D (as they had become known) began to show their popularity and dominance by selling over a million copies of their tour DVD Up All Night: The Live Tour.
With the success of One Direction, there appeared to be no set-backs for the boys, however; another band in the US sued the boyband for copyright infringement, who allegedly said that Syco and Sony had infringed their name. The result of the law-suit was that One Direction eventually won the case, and the band was able to carry on using their name in the United States.
In 2012, One Direction went to the top of the US Billboard Chart, storming to #1 with their first global album ‘Up All Night’, which sold over 3 million worldwide, and famously got the boys compared to the legendary Beatles, after they become the first British band to top the Billboard Chart – a fete not even achieved by The Beatles.
The boys won their first BRIT Award for Best British Single for “What Makes You Beautiful” in 2012 and their rollercoaster ride to stardom continued. Niall Horan, Zayn Malik, Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Louis Tomlinson performed “What Makes You Beautiful” at the 2012 Olympics Closing Ceremony, and topped off the summer by winning three awards: Most Share-Worthy Video, Best New Artist and Best Pop Video (“What Makes You beautiful”) at the MTV Music Awards.
One Direction Release Second Album Take Me Home
After cementing themselves in the record books, One Direction released their second studio album ‘Take Me Home’ which was produced by the same Swedish producers who had worked on their first studio album (Up All Night). Take Me Home included the singles “Live While We’re Young”, “Little Things” and “Kiss You”. The group had massive success with “Live While We’re Young” which reached the Top 10 across the globe and propelled the boys into international fame on a new level.
One Direction continued to increase their profile internationally at a number of high-profile events, such as the Royal Variety Show at Royal Albert Hall where the group performed “Little Things” in front of the Queen, and One Direction tickets for their Madison Square Gardens show were highly popular and sold-out.
The boys continued on their whirlwind adventure and secured a new award, The Global Success Award at the BRITS 2013, with One Direction tickets 2013 for their Take Me Home tour reaching over 300,000 sales for their six shows at The O2 Arena in London.
