Peter Gabriel rose to fame as flamboyant frontman of 70’s prog-rocker. Gabriel formed the band with fellow schoolmates Tony Banks, Anthony Phillips, Mike Rutherford and Chris Stewart in 1967.
With Genesis he recorded 6 studio albums, the last being the 1975 release, “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway.” It was during the run-up of the “The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway Tour” when tensions between band members led to Peter Gabriel’s decision to quit. Genesis and Peter Gabriel completed the 8-month world tour before leaving on good terms and going separate ways.
Peter Gabriel released a series of solo albums titled I (“Car”), II (“Scratch”), III (“Melt”), IV (“Security”). He later changed the album numbering to album titled with 2-letter words, such as “So,” “Us” and “Up.” His first single release as solo performer was the 1976’s autobiographical song, “Solsbury Hil” in which he dealt with leaving his former band, Genesis. During this period the former prog-rocker developed a penchant for World Music.
The first traces can be heard on song off Peter Gabriel’s 3rd album, “Melt” on songs such as “Games Without Frontiers,” “I Don’t Remember” and the anti-apartheid song, “Biko.”
Peter Gabriel’s biggest commercial success came in 1986 with the release of his album “So.” The album, produced by Daniel Lanois and Gabriel himself, included the massive hit singles “Sledgehammer,” “Big Time” and the Kate Bush duet, “Don’t Give Up.”
Gabriel’s own album output slowed down due to commitments with various mostly World Music related projects, such as his Real World Recording Studio, Record Label and his widely regarded WOMAD Festival. It took 6 years for “Us,” the follow-up to “So” to be completed, 10 years for 2002’s “Up” and 8 years for his most recent album, 2010’s “Scratch My Back.”
