As founding member of Joy Division, Peter Hook drew responsible for giving the mancunian post-punks its characteristic bottom end. His melodic bass is all over the albums; from the claustrophobic Unknown Pleasures opening track Disorder to the bleak, pulsating bass lines on Shadowplay and She’s Lost Control, Peter Hook not only gave Joy Division a distinctive sound but he also reinvented an approach to the bass guitar that has since influenced musicians across all genres.
The second and final Joy Division album, Closer includes some of Peter Hook’s finest moments. The industrial and punky rhythm section on Isolation is in stark contrast to the melodic and dramatic Love Will Tear Us Apart, which has not only become one of the most recognised tunes of its era but sadly also Joy Division’s swansong.
