Pulp

Pulp are an English indie-pop band from Sheffield. Formed in 1978, the present band consists of front-man Jarvis Cocker, Russell Senior (violin, guitar), Candida Doyle (keyboards), Mark Webber (guitar), Steve Mackey (bass) and Nick Banks (drums).

The band was started by Jarvis Cocker and his friend Peter Dalton while they were they attended The City School in Sheffield. Pulp went through a number of band changes before it reached a comfortable line-up.

Their journey into the world of pop stardom proved to be a rocky ride, with their early albums It and Freaks produced in the ’80s not receiving the type of success that Jarvis Cocker had intended. It was in the ‘90s that Pulp burst on to the scene, bringing with them the Brit-pop madness and glam-rock sound that they have become famously associated with today.

The N.M.E (New Musical Express) and indie music magazine Melody Maker were quick to recognise their talent and Melody Maker praised the single “O.U (Gone, Gone)” and their success led on to Mercury nominated album His n’ hers (1994), a pre-cursor to the mega smash hit album Different Class (1995). The album contained the club hits "Disco 2000", "Common People" and "Something Changed".

After battling through the realms of superstardom with the success of Different Class, the band reached the pinnacle of their career, but was unable to cope with the demands of their new lifestyle. Russell Senior left the band and the band parted ways in 1997. In 2010,

Pulp announced their reunification of the Different Class line-up for The Wireless Festival in 2011 and Pulp tickets proved highly popular for Leeds and Reading Festival in summer 2011, with the band also playing a surprise gig at the infamous Glastonbury Festival in Somerset.

In March 2012 Pulp played their first full live show at London Royal Albert Hall, with former Pulp guitarist Richard Hawley and Jarvis Cocker’s sister Saskia joining them on stage for a rendition of the song “My Lighthouse”. The show was in aid of the Teenage Cancer Trust and the band received an award for Teenage Cancer Trust Outstanding Contribution To Music.

Pulp frontman Jarvis Cocker admitted in an interview with a men’s lifestyle magazine (April 2012) that he was working on new material for the band with new tour dates announced in July 2012.
