Richard Hawley

Richard Hawley (full name Richard Willis Hawley) was born 17th January 1967 and is from Sheffield, England. Born to Dave and Lyn Hawley who were both involved in the music industry, his dad played in various bands and his mum sang in various clubs; it was no wonder that Richard Hawley yearned to follow in his parents footsteps.

As a teenager, Richard Hawley picked up his prized father’s guitar and started taking lessons. At the tender age of 14, he hit the road and toured with Chuck Fowlers, playing rock n’ roll covers on the Hamburg club scene in the early 1980s.

Richard Hawley was influenced by the likes of American rockabilly band The Stray Cats and English psychobilly band The Meteors, but just as Sheffield was being taken over by a new wave of electronic sound with the likes of The Human League, ABC, Cabaret Voltaire; Richard Hawley was only interested in traditional song writing and guitar riffs.

It was at Firth Park School that Richard Hawley started a new band called Treebound Story. The band consisted of 5 friends, Paul Infanti on vocal, Richard Hawley on guitar/BV’s, Paul Currie on bass, Rob Gregory on drums and Simon Beckett on percussion. The music focused on Richard Hawley’s passions - guitars and melodies rather than other popular music at the time.

Treebound Story released one of the legendary John Peel’s favourite songs “Swimming In The Heart of Jane” but the band failed to generate a debut album and in 1992 disbanded. Richard Hawley moved in quick succession to another band, The Lovebirds and then shortly after, the Longpigs, which had moderate success with the singles “On and On”, “She Says” and “Jesus Christ”.

Unfortunately the Longpigs record label closed down, but another door opened in the form of Pulp. Richard Hawley received a call from his old school friend and Pulp bass player Steve Mackay who asked if he would join Pulp and he went on to play guitar in the band for three years, performing at Leeds and Reading Festival, Glastonbury and V Festival, until Pulp split in 2001.

After Pulp had split in 2001, Steve Mackay urged Richard Hawley to release a solo album and in April 2000, he produced a mini album which was followed-up with his second full solo album Late Night Final (2001) which received positive reviews from the media. Two years later, his third album Lowedges, was the album which firmly put Richard Hawley in the public’s eye and got him signed to Mute Records, a subsidiary of EMI records in 2004.

Richard Hawley produced his fourth album Coles Corner (2005) and it was nominated for the Mercury Music Prize in 2006. He went on to produce a further four albums which were all centred on popular Sheffield locations and he continued to incorporate his signature guitar riffs, especially with his fifth album Lady’s Bridge (2007) which reached #6 on the UK Album Chart and received massive radio airplay.

Trueloves Gutter (2010) Richard Hawley’s 8th album moved away from his previous efforts and incorporated unusual instruments such as the waterphone, megabass, and cristal baschet. The first single, "For Your Lover, Give Some Time," was released as a digital download on 10 August 2009 and the song “Open Up Your Door” was used in an advert and become a huge success which led to the song being released as a single because of the interest in the song.
