Soundgarden shot to fame in the early 90's on the back of the Grungle craze with their third album, Badmotorfinger in 1991. The band formed in Seattle during the mid-80's by their singer/guitarist Chris Cornell, Kim Thayil on lead guitar and drummer Matt Caeron. Founding member and bassist Hire Yamamoto left the band just on the brink of their breakthrough in 1990 and was replaced by Ben Shepherd.
Although their musical roots were closer to Metal, Soundgarden kept developing their sound and when the band signed to A&M Records in 1988, the band became one of the first bands of the emerging Seatlle Grunge scene to bag a major label deal.
Soundgarden catapulted into the mainstream with the release and success of their 1994 album Superunknown. Hitting the number One spot of the US Billboard Charts in its opening week, Superunknown and its singlesBlack Hole Sun and Spoonman gave the band a Grammy Award and established Soundgarden as a major rock act. The band recorded and released one more album, 1996's Down on the Upside.
Following the release and promotional duties for Down on the Upside, Soundgarden broke up due to internal differences between its members. It wasn't until 2012 that the band decided to get back together for a series of comeback headline shows and festival appearances.
Soundgarden also worked on new songs and are released on the band's sixth studio release, 2012's King Animal.
