The Sugababes landed in the midst of “girl power” in the late ‘90s, when The Spice Girls, All Saints, Eternal, TLC were ruling the Pop charts, but; as with most of those ‘90s bands, a similar fate would ensue – or so it seemed.
Sugababes members Keisha Buchanan, Mutya Buena and Siobhán Donaghy were put together by All Saints manager Ron Tom.
Still only in their early teens when their debut single “Overload” reached #6 in the UK Single Chart, what made Sugababes stand out from their predecessors was the fact they co-wrote a lot of their own songs.
The Sugababes had four early successful top 40 UK Albums but were dropped by their record label (London Records) at the time for not selling enough copies.
In 2001 Siobhán Donaghy quit the group after there were rumours of bullying. In came ex- Atomic Kitten Heidi Range to replace her, and the new trio signed a new record deal with Island Records. They achieved #1 with their first release “Freak Like Me” and their second most successful track was “Round Round”.
Their second album Angels with Dirty Faces came in at #2 and reached 3x platinum. Another single from the album “Stronger” ensured their longevity in the UK Charts.
In 2003 their album “Three” was released in 2003 and nominated for a BRIT Award. Further success with the #1 “Hole in the Head” “Too Lost in You” (used in the hit film Love Actually) made them a global success, and the trio sang in a new version of the 1984 Christmas charity song “Do They Know It’s Christmas.”
Sadly, in- group bickering and more bullying rumours occurred, and this was followed with a hiatus. Buena left Sugababes in 2005 with the original reason citing childbirth for leaving. Amelle Berrabah joined the Sugababes to replace her.
In 2008 they released Catfights and Spotlights and went to the US to sign a contract with Jay-z’s Roc Nation label. Unfortunately Amelle Berrabah and Keisha Buchanan both left the band in 2009 and the original Sugababes were no more.
In June 2012 rumours of the original Sugababes members getting back together emerged, and on 20th July 2012 the trio confirmed their reunification.
