The Cribs

Wakefield’s finest, punk rock band The Cribs, consists of twin brothers Gary Jarman (bass, vocals), Ryan Jarman (guitar, vocals) and Ross Jarman (drums).

The Cribs passion for music led them to build Springtime Studios and they began producing music and quickly started gaining notoriety by performing at local squat and warehouse parties around Leeds.

Wichita label manager Mark Bowen fell in love with The Cribs music when he heard the band play at the Metro Club in West End, central London and promptly signed them to the label. The Cribs then enlisted avant-garde Chicago musician Bobby Conn to work with them in the studio to create the band’s eponymous debut album which was released in 2004.

The band’s second offering The New Fellas (2005) propelled The Cribs into the charts as the trio worked with new Glaswegian indie producer Edwyn Collins and contributed to many top 40 singles including “Hey Scenesters, "Mirror Kissers" and "Martell".

With the success of the album and singles, The Cribs toured relentlessly during 2005-2006 and performed on the main stages of Reading and Leeds Festival, headlining T in the Park and played at international music festival Fuji Rocks. Internationally, The Cribs toured heavily across the US, with Death Cab for Cutie and Franz Ferdinand.

By 2008, The Cribs were reaching the pinnacle of their careers and their hard work paid off when the band was signed to major label Warner Brothers, but still retained their ties with Wichita Recordings (for the UK) as the band wanted to remain to be seen as an independent alternative band and not ‘sold out’.

The Cribs saw a new change in direction when Gary Jarman relocated to Portland, USA and by chance, ended up meeting ex-Smith guitarist Johnny Marr which resulted in him joining the band in 2008.

A fruitful year for The Cribs, the band was also nominated for four NME Awards and toured across Europe, USA and Japan as well as appearing at the NME Awards Ceremony. Ignore the Ignorant (2009) reached the top 10 on the UK Album Chart and was The Cribs highest-charting release which was given critical acclaim by the likes of music magazine Mojo who described the album as "a masterpiece from start to finish” and alternative hip publication the NME, also placed the album in their top 30 albums of the year.

The album was followed up with an extensive tour across the globe and further festival appearances at Glastonbury, Lollapalooza, Fuji Rock, Benecassim, Pukkelpop and Reading and Leeds Festival, but by the end of 2010, Johnny Marr decided to leave the band to pursue solo ambitions.

Post Johnny Marr, The Cribs went on to record their fifth release In the Belly of the Brazen Bull (2012) which was again very successful and led to the band touring Brazil, Hong Kong and France. The album contained the singles "Chi-Town" and "Come on, be a No-One" and "Glitters Like Gold".
