The Killers is an American rock band from Las Vegas. The band began in 2001 and consists of Brandon Flowers (lead vocals, keyboards, bass guitar), Dave Keuning (lead guitar, piano, backing vocals), Ronnie Vannucci (drums, percussion, backing vocals) and Jr.Mark Stoermer (bass guitar, backing vocals, guitar).
The Killers shot to fame with their seminal hit "Mr. Brightside” which was first played on Radio One’s Zane Lowe's radio show. After a number of record labels vied for the attention of the band, The Killers eventually signed to major label Island Def Jam in 2004.
Their debut album Hot Fuzz (2004) was a massive success and contained the best selling singles: “Somebody Told Me", "Mr. Brightside", "All These Things That I've Done" and "Smile Like You Mean It". The album reached number one in the UK, achieving 6x platinum and number seven on the Billboard Top 200 list.
With the success of Hot Fuzz, The Killers went on to headline major festivals, and the following year the band was nominated for a number of music awards including Best Rock Album while Somebody Told Me and best Rock Song. Post Hot Fuzz came Sam's Town (2006) which also performed very well and although was planned to be “best album ever” (according to Flowers). It did reach platinum status although was not as popular as their first major release.
Performing on the BRIT Awards, The Killers picked two awards: Best International Group & International Album, and was also highly successful in the UK as well as in the US.
In 2008 The Killers went on to bring out their third album Day and Age which was massive in both American and the UK. It went 4x platinum in the UK and also contained the single “Human” which was highly successful and led on to the Day & Age Tour from 2008 to 2010.
Their tour was culled when Brandon Flowers’ mum died prematurely from brain cancer and more or less ended any immediate plans for the future.
The Killers decided to take a break after over six years on the road. The band reunited after a year and a half of pursuing solo projects and started work on their fourth studio album in May 2011.
While the band was on a hiatus, frontman Brandon Flowers released a solo album called Flamingo which was certified Gold.
In 2011, The Killers performed at Hard Rock Calling as well international festival Lollapalooza in Chile. They spent the remaining part of the year recording their fourth album Battle Born and touring across North America and Europe.
