Tom Jones In-depth Biography
Tom Jones was born in 1940 and is from south Wales. In his teenage years he loved listening to rock, blues, R&B and BBC radio.
With no qualifications behind him, Tom Jones formed the band: Tommy Scott and The Senators with manager Gordon Mills.
In 1964, he was snapped up DJ Jimmy Saville who helped to get the band signed to Decca Records. Tom Jone’s second single “It’s Not Unusual” was picked up by a Pirate radio station, but BBC Radio refused to play it, but it still reached number one.
In 1965, Tom Jones appeared on American TV show “The Ed Sullivan Show” and in the late 1960’s he brought out a number of big hits: “What’s New Pussycat”, “Thunderball”, “Green, Green Grass of Home”, “Help Yourself” and everyone’s favourite, “Delilah”.
Tom Jones got big in America with his hit TV series “This Is Tom Jones” and throughout the ‘70s he toured the world. With the loss of their manager in 1986 Tom Jones re-releases “It’s Not Unusual” and created “A Boy From Nowhere”.
Throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s he collaborated with a number of top singers and musicians. Tom Jones voiced appeared in The Simpsons and he worked with Prince on “Kiss”. He released the album “Mr Jones”, worked with Wyclef Jean and sang at the Queen’s Jubilee in 2001.
In 2004, Tom Jones worked with the legendary Jools Holland and his talents recognised when he was knighted and became Sir Tom Jones.
He later went on to perform at the Princess Diana’s Memorial Service in 2007 and performed for the 2009 Red Nose Day event, helping to raise over £5.5 million for charity.
