World Snooker Championship
The World Snooker Championship began in 1927 with the first tournament taking place at various venues; from 1977 it has been played at The Crucible Theatre, Sheffield.
John Higgins from Scotland is the current World Champion, with the number one ranking being England’s Mark Selby – two time Masters champion from Leicester. The Total UK prize fund for World Snooker Championship is £1,110,000.
Snooker first began as a sport in Jubbulpore, India in 1875 and developed over time with various variations of the game including different coloured balls and formations until the official tournament started in the 20th century.
